Career Day at MEC is a “Community Affair”

On Thursday, March 9, 2023, our students participated in a special Career Day organized by our Security Officer, Mr. Morgan. Students “prepared” prior to the day by writing resumes and filling out applications. Mr. Morgan purchased dress shirts and brought ties for the male students. Mr. Morgan even taught the male students how to tie their ties. Mr. Stephens, our custodian manager, ran out to purchase an item for one of our students, who needed something to wear. They were then dressed and prepared for their mock interview with our community mentors.

This “community affair” included interviewers: Mr. Donzell Franklin, who has been a mentor to the male students; Mr. Jones, district Social Worker; Mr. Derrick Watson, formerly from MEC, and currently at the high school. Mrs. Smith, a new teacher to MEC recruited several professionals: Mr. Porter W. Myrick, III, a corporate executive and Mr. Tim Ward, who works in human resources and recruitment.

Our invited guests made comments to encourage the students and to help them understand the importance of communication, putting your best foot forward, and the importance of community.

After the comments, the interviews were held. Incentives were given to the best dressed, the best interviewee, and for participation. All students received gift cards for participating. Two middle school students and two high students were given gift cards for interviewing skills, and the top gift card was given to a high school student who was the best overall.

The community event ended with pizza for everyone who participated, and if students weren’t too full, they played in an exciting basketball game.

The MEC staff and students and members of the community helped to make this a successful and meaningful event for students.
